WHY I'M TRAVELING TO ATHENS
Meg McGurk, Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership
“Have you ever been to Athens? It’s a lot like Chapel Hill!” This is a question I’m often asked, and after going on the Chamber’s Inter-City Visit advance trip to explore Athens this winter, I’m beginning to understand why our communities are so often compared. Good music, great food, and a passionate love for the University: these qualities describe both Athens and Chapel Hill!
When we return to Athens this September for the Inter-City Visit, there are many elements of the Athens-Clarke County community that I look forward to exploring more deeply. From economic partners working to revitalize downtown to meaningfully engaged community groups, Athens has an palpable, collaborative spirit.
The Athens community has worked together to foster a strong local economy and a burgeoning entrepreneurial scene. Athens educational leaders partner on initiatives and programs at all levels of learning, a collaboration that stems from a deep desire to build the community up starting with its people first. And Athens has leveraged its local vibe and culture into a strong brand that is felt locally and nationally. All of these strengths make Athens a shining beacon of the South that I’m excited to learn more about.
I'm also excited for you to learn with me in Athens! Join me on the Chamber and its Partnership for a Sustainable Community's Inter-City Visit Leadership Conference to Athens, GA, Sept. 21-23, 2014.
